Organic Garden Pest Control

The practice of organic garden pest control is growing in popularity. People want safe, natural ways to control pests in their garden. There are plenty of methods you can use to take care of a pest problem without using dangerous chemicals. Whether you're growing vegetables, fruits or flowers, you can find the perfect method of poison-free pest control. Some gardeners are so desperate to get rid of pests naturally that they actually pluck the offending insects off by hand. However, you probably don't want to go this route, as it can be time consuming especially if you have a large garden.

If aphids are a problem for you, you may want to consider introducing the aphid's number one enemy into your garden -- the ladybug. You can actually purchase ladybugs and set them loose in your garden. They will protect your garden and take care of your aphid problem. If you can't find ladybugs for sale in your local area, try checking online. Believe it or not, you can actually have live ladybugs shipped to your home. But what if aphids aren't your biggest problem? You will need to devise another plan of action.

There are mixtures you can make yourself to ward off garden pests. Try steeping a variety of pungent herbs and spices in vinegar and spraying the mixture on your plants. Garlic, cayenne, black pepper, mint and lavender are especially good. You can even sprinkle dry black and red pepper around your plants to discourage pests. Another method is to actually plant pest repelling herbs around the plants you want to protect. Chives and lemon balm are two examples of herbs that can help repel unwanted insects. Planting these herbs at strategic areas around the garden can often work to keep damage from occurring.

To learn more about organic garden pest control, you may want to check out some books on the subject. There are plenty of books available these days about all aspects of organic gardening. Two top titles are Organic Pest Control for Home and Garden by Tom Roberts and The Organic Gardener's Handbook of Natural Insect and Disease Control by Barbara W. Ellis and Fern Marshall Bradley. Books such as these will teach you everything you need to know about using organic pest control methods in your garden.
