How to Do Your Own Pest Control

Are you dealing with pests in your home or garden? If so, you're likely seeking a way to eradicate them without spending a fortune. One way is to do your own pest control, which can save you a great deal of money. How to begin this process all depends on what kind of pest you have. There are certainly all kinds. Examples include rodents, roaches, spiders, beetles, flies, termites, ants, aphids and earwigs. This is but a small list of the potential pests you may come across. When getting rid of your unwanted guests, so to speak, you will need to decide what kind of method you want to use.
For example, if you have mice, there are several ways to go. You can use the traditional mousetraps which are baited and snap closed when the mouse touches the trap to get the food. However, some people feel these traps are gruesome and inhumane. Glue traps are another alternative, as they simply trap the mouse with a sticky substance. An even more humane approach are the no-kill traps. These traps lure the mouse inside a special box then close after the mouse is inside, trapping it. You then take the trap away from your home and release the mouse. Another part of getting rid of mice is to close off their entry point. You need to find out where they are coming in and block the area.
Then there are bugs. One of the most common types of garden pest is the aphid. Aphids munch on your plants and flowers and cause damage. You could go with a commercial preparation of insect repellant, but some people prefer a more natural approach. Garden pests are repelled by spices, so try sprinkling a mixture of cayenne and hot pepper around your garden to deter them. Some organic gardeners even bring in ladybugs, who are notorious aphid killers and a great friend to the garden.
When it comes to indoor areas, another common pest is the roach. Roaches multiply quickly and can become a real problem in no time at all. To battle roaches, try placing store-bought roach traps around your home away from children and pets. You may also want to get a roach spray or bomb and treat your home. You will need to leave your home while the spray or bomb dissipates. Once you've gotten rid of roaches you want to keep them away. This means making sure you don't leave food or crumbs lying around.
Lots of homeowners and even renters choose the do your own pest control route. An exterminator is expensive and often unnecessary. With all the products on the market today for home pest control, it is easier than ever to get rid of unwanted pests on your own. To browse the selection, try shopping at your local home improvement store. Stores like Home Depot and Lowes have vast aisles devoted to eliminating household and garden pests.
